Anecdotes of increased church attendance and Bible purchases fueled hope that revival was stirring, especially among younger Americans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But any renewed interest in Christianity has not translated into deeper biblical conviction, according to new findings from the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Worldview Inventory 2026<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the annual study of the worldview of Americans from the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, the new study of the nation\u2019s worldview landscape adults shows that only 4% of qualify as having a biblical worldview\u2014including a jaw-dropping low of just 1% among Gen Z (ages 18 to 22).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That overall worldview figure remains unchanged from 2023 and down sharply from 12% in 1994, according to the study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA quarter century ago, 12% of the adult population held a biblical worldview,\u201d said veteran researcher George Barna, Director of Research at the CRC and author of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Worldview Inventory<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSince then, we have seen a steady reduction in that incidence. We reached a low point\u20144%\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.arizonachristian.edu\/CRC\/2023\/CRC_AWVI2023_Release1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barna explained, \u201cThe fact that we have not plumbed new depths since then, hopefully suggests that we have bottomed out and are in line to experience positive growth in biblical thought and action.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barna emphasized that everyone has a worldview\u2014an internal framework that shapes how they interpret reality, make decisions, and define right and wrong. A biblical worldview, sometimes called biblical theism, reflects consistent alignment between one\u2019s beliefs, behaviors, and the teachings of Scripture.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AWVI 2026<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> research shows that levels of biblical beliefs and behavior have remained stagnant since 2023, indicating that recent predictions of spiritual revival and renewal in American may be premature, Barna suggests.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are key research highlights from the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AWVI 2026<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Biblical worldview incidence remains historically low. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 4% of American adults qualify as what the study calls \u201cIntegrated Disciples\u201d\u2014individuals whose beliefs and behaviors are consistently aligned with biblical principles. That percentage has remained unchanged since 2023 and is down from 6% in 2020.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>The middle is collapsing.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The proportion of \u201cEmergent Followers\u201d\u2014adults leaning toward biblical principles but not fully aligned\u2014has fallen from 25% in 2020 to just 10% in 2026. Meanwhile, the share of \u201cWorld Citizens\u201d\u2014those who largely embrace non-biblical worldviews\u2014has grown from 69% in 2020 to 85% today.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Generational gaps are stark.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Only 1% of Gen Z adults possess a biblical worldview. Among Millennials, the figure is 2%. In contrast, 7% of Gen X and Boomers qualify as Integrated Disciples. The data confirms a consistent pattern: the younger the adult, the less likely they are to hold a biblical worldview.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Evangelical affiliation is no guarantee.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Among adults attending evangelical Protestant churches, just 11% have a biblical worldview\u2014down from 21% in 2020. Even among theologically defined born-again Christians, only 12% qualify, a sharp drop from 19% six years ago.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Political alignment correlates strongly.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Twelve percent of political conservatives hold a biblical worldview, compared to just 1% of moderates and liberals. Still, even among conservatives, the incidence has declined from 16% in 2020.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research also identified a small but influential segment known as SAGE Cons\u2014Spiritually Active Governance Engaged Conservative Christians\u2014who represent about 5% of the adult population. Nearly half (44%) of that group holds a biblical worldview, making them one of the few clusters with substantial worldview integration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barna warns that the broader cultural trajectory is alarming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMake no mistake about it, we are losing American society and all that it has historically represented because we have succumbed to the influence of the culture instead of the exhortations and promises of God,\u201d Barna said. \u201cWith just 1% of Gen Z exhibiting a biblical worldview, the ways of Christ are facing extinction in America unless we act today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added, \u201cJesus commanded us to make disciples. You cannot become a genuine disciple of Jesus without having a biblical worldview. Because you do what you believe, if you do not think like Jesus, you will not act like Jesus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the sobering data, Barna rejects the idea that further decline is inevitable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He points to measurable gains among students at Arizona Christian University, where longitudinal tracking since 2020 has shown an 833% increase in the proportion of students who develop a biblical worldview between freshman year and graduation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat means the typical ACU graduate is 28 times more likely than a typical 21- to 24-year-old in America to live as an Integrated Disciple,\u201d Barna noted. \u201cThe ACU discipleship model persuasively shows a turnaround is very possible\u2014but it must be intentional and strategic, and requires an immersive, multi-year commitment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barna attributed the growth among ACU students to what he calls an \u201cimmersive biblical worldview environment\u201d and commitment to ongoing measurement of student worldview using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/azcu.edu\/culturalresearchcenter\/2020\/09\/10\/groundbreaking-student-worldview-inventory-launched-at-arizona-christian-university\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACU Student Worldview Inventory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although we continue to hear predictions of revival, the survey results underscore how lacking American culture is in Integrated Disciples.
