Course Description

Honors seminars include close readings of classic texts of the western canon in theology, philosophy, literature, and history, with an emphasis on biblically informed books and ideas. In addition to readings from the Old and New Testaments, representative authors include Plato, Augustine, Anselm, Milton, Dostoyevsky, and Tolkien. Students engage in intensive discussions about the ideas contained in their readings, especially eternally important topics such as truth, knowledge, goodness, freedom, and happiness, and how our understanding of God shapes our perceptions about each of these issues. All HON courses place particular emphasis on the formation of students' intellectual, moral, and spiritual character. Assignments emphasize the ways in which learning should direct intellect, will, and desire toward God.
