Serving Keeps ACU Close To No. 11 UMW

Lewiston, Idaho- In their final match of the Hells Canyon Grand Invitational hosted by Lewis-Clark State College, Arizona Christian faced off with NAIA number 11 ranked Montana Western on Saturday morning.  Serving kept the Firestorm close to the Bulldogs.

  • The opening set was close throughout with the teams arriving at a 18-18 score
  • ACU up 23-19 saw UMW roll off five points to reach set point
  • Tied 26-26, a bad UMW set and a Thomson ace gave ACU the set
  • Behind 17-11, an ace from Emich and kills from Coughlin and Van Wie helped create an 18-18 tie
  • UMW took the lead but was never ahead more than two points down the stretch
  • Van Wie started the third set with a kill
  • Montana Western answered with a 6-0 run and did not look back
  • UMW seemed to take control early in set four but ACU kept chasing
  • The first Firestorm lead came at 18-17 thanks to a Van Wie kill
  • Trailing 20-19, ACU scored six of the last seven points for the comeback set win
  • A kill from Tedrow gave ACU a 6-4 edge in the fifth
  • But a 6-0 run for the Bulldogs gave them the lead for good
  • For their efforts in Lewiston, Tedrow and Van Wie were selected all-tournament
