Glendale, AZ – In the first ever meeting between the two programs, the Lady Firestorm used another strong defensive performance to come out victorious over the Bears of Truett-McConnell (GA), 56-38. Graduate transfer Valeria Brewer led all scorers with 21 points.
The early season shooting woes for the Firestorm continued in the first half of the contest, as the team shot a mere 26% from the field and 2-12 from the three-point line. Their defense though produced 17 first half turnovers and they took a 23-16 lead into half time. The Firestorm was able to turn it around in the second half largely thanks to Brewer who scored 19 of her 21 points in the third and fourth periods.
In addition to her scoring, Brewer also pulled down 7 rebounds and grabbed 5 of the teams 15 steals on the night. Kate Carpenter continued to protect the paint with 5 blocks, while Hannah Strauss once again provided energy off the bench with 3 steals to go with her 8 points and 4 rebounds.
Thoughts from Head Coach Rusty Rogers “Super impressed with our defensive intensity and execution. Forcing 29 turnovers tonight was our offense! Once we start shooting the ball like we are capable of, we could have a formidable squad. Very happy to see Val breakout in the second half when we really needed a lift.”
