Emergency Response Plans

• Assess situation and contact 911 if necessary, then Campus Safety
• Gather students/staff and move to a safe location
• Send staff member to the scene/hospital to provide updates on student/staff member
  • Request assistance from Campus Safety Director for direction
• Provide EMS/PD/Campus Safety with:
  • What occurred
  • Are there injuries
  • What time the incident occurred
  • Who was involved
  • Where did it occur
• Notifications: Note what students/staff were injured and where they were taken for treatment. Send staff to scene/hospital.

Information to Gather

• Number of calls received
• Date, time, and duration of calls
• Exact words of threat — "What did the caller say?"

Questions to Ask the Caller

• When is the bomb going to explode?
• Where is the bomb right now?
• What does the bomb look like?
• What kind of bomb is it?
• What will cause the bomb to explode?
• Did you place the bomb?
• Why did you place the bomb at this location?
• Where are you?

After the Call

• Get someone's attention and have them call 9-1-1
• If alone, call 9-1-1 after obtaining the answers noted above
• Then contact Campus Safety at (602) 366-5268

• When in doubt, contact 9-1-1 and Campus Safety
• Secure the area

Be Cautious Of

• Foreign mail, air mail, and special deliveries
• Restrictive markings such as "Confidential" or "Personnel"
• Excessive postage
• Handwritten or poorly typed address
• Incorrect titles or misspelling of common words
• Oil stains or discolored packages
• Excessive weight
• Rigid, lopsided, or uneven envelopes
• Protruding wires or tinfoil
• Excessive tape or string
• No return address

If exposed to the contents of the package, wash immediately and seek medical assistance.

If You Are Outside

• Go to an area away from trees, buildings, walls, and power lines
• Drop to the ground in the fetal position until shaking stops

If You Are Inside a Building

• If inside, stay inside — don't run outside
• Take cover underneath a desk/table and protect your head
• Stay away from windows or objects that could fall on you
• Help others in need if requested
• Persons in wheelchairs should lock their wheels

After the Earthquake

• Don't use cell phones except to report serious injuries
• Be prepared to evacuate
• Listen for direction from EMS, Police, or Campus Safety
• DO NOT ENTER BUILDINGS that do not look safe

Only trained and authorized personnel are permitted to respond to hazardous materials incidents. Employees must be trained in the safe use of chemicals or chemical management prior to working in a lab or cleaning up minor spills.

Minor Spill or Leak

• Attempt to contain the spill
• Wear proper PPE while cleaning up the spill/leak
• Notify supervisor and call Campus Safety immediately

Major Hazardous Spill

• Call 911, then Campus Safety
• Do not attempt to clean up the spill yourself
• Provide cleanup/rescue personnel with appropriate Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and other important information

• 911 will activate Emergency Medical Services
• The Fire Department will respond and treat the patient
• AED located in the Student Activity Center Gym (NE Corner of court)
• ACU Campus Security will document the incident

Mental Health Emergencies Include

• Statements made to harm self
• Strange or destructive behavior
• Severe emotional behavior

What to Do

• Call 911 if immediately life threatening
• Notify Campus Safety
• Remain calm — keep the person talking — call other resources to assist

If There Is a Fire on Your Floor

• Manually activate the fire alarm system
• If safe to do so, exit the building immediately, close doors
• Call 911
• STOP-DROP-ROLL if your clothes catch on fire
• Drop to your hands and knees — crawl to an exit
• Stay low and hold your breath as much as possible
• Breathe shallow through the nose
• Be prepared to signal to someone outside, but do not break windows

If the Fire Alarm Is Activated

• WALK to the nearest exit or stairwell — don't use elevators
• Assist persons with special needs
• Notify personnel if you know of someone trapped in the building
• Feel the door with the back of your hand before using it
• Do not attempt to save possessions at the risk of your safety
• Don't break windows (oxygen feeds the fire)
• Stay low if moving through the smoke

Behavior deemed threatening or harmful by another person.

Stalking

• Call 911, ACU Campus Safety, seek safety with groups or others
• Do not confront the stalker
• Note the physical description of the stalker, vehicle, etc.

Assault / Domestic Violence (DV) or Relationship Violence

• Call 911, ACU Campus Safety, seek safety, and medical attention
• Remain with victim until EMS, Security, and LEO arrive

Civil disturbances include riots, demonstrations, threatening individuals, crimes in progress, or assemblies that have become significantly disruptive.

• Assess situation — call 911 and Campus Safety
• Avoid provoking or obstructing demonstrators
• Secure your area (stay inside, lock buildings, etc.)
• Continue normal routines if possible
• Stay away from windows and doors
• Prepare for evacuation or relocation (Campus Safety will advise)

Remain calm and notify Campus Safety.

Major Power Outage

• Follow direction of Campus Safety
• Shelter in place until situation is evaluated
• Lab personnel should secure all experiments and unplug electric equipment prior to evacuating
• Do not light candles or other type of flame for lighting
• Turn off and unplug all electric equipment (computers, etc.) and light switches

People Trapped in Elevator

• Keep the passengers calm and let them know you are getting help
• Call 911 and Campus Safety
• Stay until EMS/Police arrive

• Evacuate from the flooded area
• Contact Campus Safety
• Use extreme caution around electric wires, appliances, and equipment
• Secure vital equipment and chemicals
• Don't return to the building unless you have been given instructions by Campus Safety

• Direct those with special needs to a stairwell
